Title: "Biomechanical regulation of epithelial barrier morphogenesis, renewal and disease"
Occasion: SFB Seminar
Host: Christian Ungermann
Start: 27.10.2022 - 15:15
Location: CellNanOs 38/201

About the speaker: Carien Niessen is Professor of Cell Biology of the skin, Center for Molecular Medicine at the Medical University of Köln

Abstract of the talk: How cell shape and mechanics controls tissue turnover and function is still poorly understood. In the squamous stratifying epithelium of the skin, the epidermis, stereotypic changes in cell shape guide the differentiation and upward migration of cells. Using the epidermis as a model system, my laboratory asks how cell shape, fate and position are coordinated, and how the integration of adhesion mechanics and signalling regulate the formation and renewal of intratissue compartments within the epidermis in health and disease. I will discuss how cell polarity and adhesion regulate epidermal stem cell dynamics and barrier regeneration, and coordinate junctional and cytoskeletal mechanics at the cellular and supracellular level, and address how changes in biomechanical pathways contributes to pathology.
