About the speaker: Christian Münch is a researcher at the Institute of Biochemistry at the Goethe University, Frankfurt

Abstract of the talk: A balanced protein homeostasis (proteostasis) in the different cellular compartments is crucial to maintain function and survival. In mitochondria, protein import plays an important role in proteostasis, in addition to controlling protein folding, processing and degradation. Consequently, both intra- and extra-mitochondrial processes need to be regulated to adjust mitochondrial proteostasis.

My presentation will focus on our new results that examine the interplay of protein quality control mechanisms across compartments. I will present data on the consequences of mitochondrial protein misfolding and the following retrograde signaling via the mitochondrial unfolded protein response, adjustments in mitochondrial protein translation and import, and degradation of mitochondria by mitophagy. These processes tightly integrate to ensure mitochondrial proteostasis.
