"Armeria maritima (grass carnation)"

Flower of the year - 2024

The Loki Schmidt Foundation has selected the grass carnation as Flower of the Year 2024 and wants to draw attention to the importance of these flower-rich habitats for native biodiversity by choosing a coastal and nutrient-poor grassland species. Contrary to what its German name might suggest, the grass carnation is neither a grass nor a carnation.
Learn more about this plant on a one-hour guided tour of Osnabrück University's Botanical Garden, find out that the long flowering period provides insects with a reliable source of food and that it is very popular as an ornamental perennial for wild plant gardens. In addition, the grass carnation was once used in folk medicine to treat epilepsy and even today a tea made from dried grass carnations has a diuretic effect, which is why the wild plant has been given the name 'piss flower' in the Eifel.
After the tour, there is a little surprise for the participants.
