Abstract of the talk: The genus Allium (leek) is by far the most extensive genus of the Amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae) with over 1000 species. The Botanical Garden of the University of Osnabrück houses one of the largest scientific Allium collections in the world. Thanks to the collection, many phylogenetic and taxonomic questions in the genus Allium have been answered. The discovery of new species, the emergence of cultivated plants and the breeding of new, ornamental varieties for use in the garden, are vividly explained in the guided tour.
